Academy professors serve as military and academic leaders within their respective departments. Academy professors are a critical link between the senior academic leaders at West Point and the remainder of faculty and staff.

Professor, USMA, and Deputy Head

Principal responsibilities include executing the department’s vision and leading faculty and staff to enhance the quality and national stature of the academic programs, leadership and governance, and the development of military and civilian faculty. Candidates should possess significant leadership experience and practical experience related to the subjects taught in the Department.

Candidates should have a record of research and publication and demonstrated excellence in education at the college level, with teaching at USMA or a comparable college or university being highly desirable. Candidates should hold a doctorate (typically a Ph.D.) in Management, Psychology, Engineering Psychology, or a closely related discipline, or they must have a master's degree with the ability to obtain the doctorate within three years of starting advanced civil schooling. Dedication to excellence in teaching and a strong commitment to the educational, military, physical, and ethical development of cadets both inside and outside the classroom are essential requirements of this position. 

Officers should have an exemplary military performance record, including significant leadership experience in operational units and completion of advanced military schooling (Intermediate Level Education at a minimum). Those selected for Professor, USMA, positions may serve at the discretion of the Secretary of the Army until age 64. Upon retirement, any Professor, USMA, whose service as a Professor, USMA, has been long and distinguished, may, at the discretion of the President, be retired in the grade of brigadier general.

The Army officer selected and ultimately appointed Professor, USMA, will be responsible for leading mission support for the department’s research centers, cyber think tank, and undergraduate core and elective courses in electrical engineering, computer science, and cyber science. The Deputy Head will establish goals and objectives in accordance with the Department Head’s vision; serve as chief of staff and personnel manager; lead mission support functions; oversee financial and physical resources, teach cadets, and maintain a research program. 

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, cybersecurity or closely related discipline, or they must have a master's degree with the ability to obtain the doctorate within three years of starting advanced civil schooling. Applicants should demonstrate high capacity for further academic achievement and scholarship, possess vision for preparing future warfighters to win in the presence of ever-changing cyber, robotics, and artificial intelligence capabilities, with teaching experience at USMA or a comparable college or university being highly desirable.

Academy Professor

The Associate Dean for Faculty Development leads efforts to promote excellence across the five domains of teaching, scholarship, service, cadet development, and faculty development. 

To this end, the Associate Dean for Faculty Development provides policy oversight of USMA regulations related to faculty excellence and supports Dean’s Staff organizations in faculty excellence activities. The Associate Dean for Faculty Excellence also advocates for necessary changes and improvements in USMA policy in faculty excellence areas and serves as the initial point of contact for public and private entities seeking collaboration and opportunities with USMA in areas related to faculty excellence.

Duties include oversight of design, instruction, and faculty development for undergraduate courses in reading, study skills, critical thinking, information literacy, and sport psychology.
