Language, Culture, and Communication for Strategic Leadership
DEWL research examines how language constructs meaning, how culture influences strategy, and how narratives shape political and military outcomes.
This work directly supports Army and Department of Defense priorities in:
- Information operations and strategic communication
- Coalition and multinational interoperability
- Cultural training and regional expertise
- Leader development for multidomain operations
In an era where influence can be as powerful as force, DEWL strengthens the Army’s intellectual and communicative advantage.
Signature Research Themes
DEWL research is organized around signature themes that develop the linguistic, cultural, and communicative capabilities essential for effective leadership in complex operational environments. These areas integrate language proficiency, regional expertise, and the humanities to enhance cross-cultural understanding, strengthen strategic communication, and prepare leaders to operate across the global human terrain.
Through the Center for Languages, Cultures, and Regional Studies (CLCRS), DEWL conducts applied and theoretical research in:
- Second language acquisition
- Experiential and immersion-based learning
- Cross-cultural competence assessment
- Regional expertise development
- Language training strategy for the Army and DoD
CLCRS contributes to Defense Language Office studies, supports the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command’s Culture Training Strategy, and collaborates with the Army Research Institute to improve leader preparation.
DEWL’s Foreign Area Studies programs integrate language, history, geography, and political analysis to develop deep regional expertise across:
- Africa
- East Asia
- Eurasia
- Europe
- Latin America
- Middle East
Research initiatives examine:
- Political institutions and state building
- Terrorism and irregular warfare
- Civil-military relations

Cadets develop the intellectual agility required to operate in culturally complex environments.
Through the West Point Humanities Center (WPHC) and the biennial Conference on Language, Culture, and Military, DEWL leads national conversations on the human dimension of war.
Research spans:
- Representations of combat across global traditions
- Narrative ethics and moral injury
- Memory, identity, and military experience
- Literature as a lens for strategic insight
This scholarship reinforces a central truth: war remains a profoundly human endeavor.
The Mounger Writing Center and Stokes Fellows Program serve as research and practice laboratories for advanced communication pedagogy.
The Stokes Fellows Program:
- Trains cadets in writing theory and pedagogy
- Produces conference-level undergraduate research
- Develops future leaders skilled in argument, clarity, and persuasion
Many Fellows have earned elite national scholarships and graduate placements, demonstrating the intellectual rigor of DEWL’s communication research ecosystem.
