Year-by-Year Snapshot

This progression builds foundational language skills first, advances to professional communication and cultural analysis, and culminates in independent research and leadership-focused application.

First Year – Foundations

Complete core courses in composition, literature, and world language while building a base in history and social sciences

Second Year – Regional Core

Begin required courses in global and European geography and comparative politics. Continue language development at the intermediate level.

Third Year – Advanced Study

Take upper-level courses in European politics, history, diplomacy, economics, and security studies. Participate in immersion or exchange opportunities when available.

Fourth Year – Integration and Application

Complete complementary support courses and your integrative experience, such as Military Geography, State Building, or a language capstone.

Capstone and Culminating Experience

Complete an integrative experience that demonstrates mastery of regional expertise and language proficiency. Options include an advanced language and culture capstone or a course such as Military Geography or State Building that connects academic study to operational contexts.

Cadets pursuing honors complete an additional advanced language course and a faculty supervised thesis in their selected language. This research requires sustained analysis, original argumentation, and presentation of findings, preparing you for strategic assignments, graduate education, or future designation as a Foreign Area Officer.

Your culminating experience reflects what the major is designed to produce: an officer who can think critically about Europe, communicate effectively across cultures, and apply regional knowledge in service to the Army.
