After graduating from university, James enlisted in the US Army in 2011. He later completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as an officer in the Military Police Corps. After commissioning, James spent 2012-2013 in the United Kingdom on an exchange at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. There he trained with the British Army, picking up the game of cricket and learning how to properly polish boots. It was also at Sandhurst that he met his wife, Charlotte Humphreys, with the two of them marrying in December 2017.

As a Military Police officer, James has been stationed in Fort Moore, Germany, Fort Liberty, and West Point. After completing company command at West Point, James attended Columbia University in New York City, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Slavic Cultures in 2022.
