A Career of Responsibility

As a second lieutenant, you may lead a platoon of 30 to 40 soldiers and be accountable for millions of dollars in equipment. You plan training, manage maintenance readiness, and oversee personnel systems.

As a captain, you may command a company of 100 to 200 soldiers or serve on a battalion staff responsible for synchronizing logistics, personnel, and operational planning.

As a field grade officer, you may serve at brigade, division, or institutional levels shaping policy, advising senior leaders, and managing large organizations.

Service comes first. The leadership, resource management, and decision-making experience you gain provide a foundation that remains valuable throughout your career.

Questions Prospective Cadets Ask

What makes the Management major different from a traditional business program?

You study finance, operations, strategy, and human resource management while simultaneously holding real leadership roles within the Corps of Cadets. The combination of academic rigor and daily accountability for people and resources creates preparation that extends beyond classroom theory.

What happens after graduation?

You commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. Management majors enter branches across the Army where they immediately lead soldiers and manage equipment, budgets, and training plans.

How much does it cost?

There is no tuition cost. West Point provides education, room and board, medical care, and a stipend in exchange for a service commitment after graduation.

Is research required?

Research is optional but encouraged. Cadets may pursue independent studies, honors theses, internships, and applied projects with Army agencies and industry partners.

How early can I participate in internships?

Most internships occur during summers after yearling and cow year. Management majors have access to Army, government, and corporate internships connected to officer development.

Can I add a minor?

Yes. With proper planning, cadets may pursue approved minors that complement their major and career goals.

Am I ready for this major?

The Management major is academically rigorous, but it is designed to develop you. You do You do not need prior business coursework. The program is designed to develop you. If you are willing to think critically, work hard, and accept responsibility, you are prepared to succeed.

Capstone Experience

  • COL Archie L. Bates III
    Professor and Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership. A West Point graduate with advanced degrees in national security strategy and psychology, he brings both operational leadership and deep academic expertise to the study of organizations.
  • COL Everett Spain
    Professor of Management and senior advisor to the Army Talent Management Task Force. His research and teaching focus on leader development and talent management across the Army.
  • LTC Andrea Kaman
    Director of the West Point Leadership Center. With experience in command and congressional fellowship roles, she connects classroom leadership concepts to strategic level Army decision making.
  • Dr. Hugh Liebert
    Director of the Dawkins Scholars Program. He mentors cadets competing for prestigious scholarships and supports academic excellence beyond graduation.
