With a commitment to ensuring the safety and security of those living, working and visiting West Point, U.S. Army Garrison West Point and the West Point Fire Department (WPFD) teamed up for a Fire Prevention Week Proclamation signing Oct. 4 at the West Point Middle School (WPMS).
Members of the West Point community, including school children and their parents, were in attendance as the Acting USAG West Point Garrison Commander, Col. Brian Jacobs, and USAG West Point Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt. Maj. Michel Fraser, signed the proclamation during a ceremony.
WPFD Chief Alex Rivera spoke to the attendees about the importance of fire safety before the signing of the proclamation. Also in attendance were several WPFD firefighters, WPMS personnel and Sparky the Fire Dog.
Fire Prevention Week, which is in its 101st year, takes place from Oct. 8-14. The theme this year is “Cooking safety starts with you. Pat attention to fire prevention.”
The purpose of the week is to promote informing the public on the importance of smoke alarms in the home and practicing home fire escape plans to help with survival from a fire.
