Despite the wet, windy conditions, about 80 volunteers showed up to honor and remember the West Point graduates, their family members and others buried at the West Point Cemetery for the 11th annual West Point Wreaths Across America event Saturday. This year, 7,050 wreaths were laid at each headstone through the generosity of several donors who give through the Wreaths Across America. Since 1992, Wreaths Across America has been committed to teaching younger generations about the value of their freedoms, and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed so much to protect those freedoms. Jackie and Dan McNally and Dr. Todd Crowder, Department of Physical Education professor, have been the driving force of the West Point WAA since its inception in 2010. Among the attendees this year were several Gold Star Families (above left) to include Deb and Patrick Carpenter remembering their son, Matt Carpenter, U.S. Military Academy 2003 graduate; Lorraine and Richard Griffenkrantz (lower right) honoring their son, Paul Voelke, USMA 1998 graduate; Marion and Dennis Zilinski, their daughter Tiffany Shiver and representatives of the 1st Lt. Dennis Zilinski Foundation remembering Dennis Zilinski, USMA 2004 graduate; and John Vigna honoring his wife Lisa Vigna, USMA 1988 graduate. (Above left) Crowder talks to the Gold Star Families.
