Approximately 50 fifth graders from the West Point Elementary School took a field trip to Bartlett Hall May 31 to experience a science adventure with professors and instructors from the Chemistry and Life Sciences and Physics and Nuclear Engineering Departments.

Academy professors Col. Jason Barnhill (CLS), Lt. Col. Andy Kick (CLS) and Lt. Col. Will Koch (PANE) organized the event with WPES Fifth-Grade Science Teacher Marta Hasz to make the day happen for the young adolescents.

The students spent more than two hours learning many facets of science to include visiting the West Point Observatory to examine the sky, learning Pill Bug behavior, an introduction to Physics demonstration, visiting a Planetarium, witnessing Hydrogen Balloon combustion, a demonstration of eye function and learning about nuclear energy, radiation and X-rays.

The day allowed the fifth-grade students to observe some science experiments and what learning science at the college level looks like.
