WEST POINT, N.Y. – The American Council of Trustees and Alumni recently recognized the American Foundations minor at the U.S. Military Academy as an “Oasis of Excellence”.

The American Foundations minor, which is administered by the Department of Social Sciences, focuses on providing an enhanced understanding and appreciation of the American founding and the U.S. Constitution. The program is jointly led by faculty from the Department of Social Sciences and the Department of History.

“The mission of the American Foundations program is to deepen cadets’ understanding of the Constitution in accord with West Point’s overall mission of forming leaders of character ready to serve the Army and our nation,” said Co-Director of American Foundations, Dr. Hugh Liebert. “The American Foundations minor, guest speaker program, and academic enrichment experiences create an interdisciplinary community of cadets and faculty dedicated to understanding America’s founding principles. We are honored to receive this recognition.”

The program prepares cadets to fulfill their oath to support and defend the U.S. Constitution. Additionally, it provides an interdisciplinary approach to the foundations of American history, economic development, and political philosophy. It also sponsors guest lectures and educational enrichment opportunities on America’s founding principles for the entire West Point community.

This designation is characterized by ACTA as identifying “outstanding programs at colleges and universities across the country that are dedicated to educating students for informed citizenship in a free society by maintaining the highest academic standards.”

The award puts the American Foundations program in the distinguished company of top educational programs at the national level.
