WEST POINT, N.Y. – The U.S. Military Academy has declared a Public Health Emergency to align with State of New York and surrounding counties to be prepared for the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My top priority remains the well-being of the entire West Point community. Our deliberate and proactive approach is the only way to mitigate the effects and limit the spread of COVID-19,” said Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams, superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy.  “This declaration reflects the severity of the danger facing our community. It also provides me the authority to fully implement and enforce the measures necessary to protect this installation.”

To date, we’ve had eight teammates – three cadets and five civilian employees – who have tested positive for the virus.  All eight are isolated and progressing well. Our thoughts are with them and their families.

The declaration of a public health emergency permits the installation commander protective measures, such as restricting post access and limiting services. The emergency order is in effect for 30 days and can be terminated or extended as required.

“My deepest thanks to the entire West Point team who are working tirelessly to enable continued operations here and to protect both the installation and the health of every member of the community,” Williams said. “Our Soldiers, custodial staff, nurses, doctors, Department of Public Works, gate guards, first responders, and chaplains are on the front lines of our efforts. Your work has been critical to protecting the force and sustaining operations here.”
