West Point To Host International Military Skills Competition

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The U.S. Military Academy will host the 57th Sandhurst Military Skills Competition on April 26 and 27.  

Hosted by West Point since 1967, teams will compete in a rigorous 36-hour course to test warrior spirit, cohesion, and dedication to mission accomplishment. At the end of the competition, one team will be named the Sandhurst champion. The winning team will be chosen based on their collective performance in 15 different events testing physical fitness, military skills, teamwork, and leadership.  

This year’s two-day competition consists of 48 teams, including 17 international teams, 16 ROTC teams, ten U.S. Military Academy company teams, and five U.S. service academy teams. 

"Sandhurst is the premiere cadet military skills competition in the world. This year’s competition is designed to push them to their limits and, in the process, inspire us with their tenacity, determination, and grit,” said Department of Military Instruction Director Col. Mark Federovich. “We are honored to host an event that showcases how impressive these competitors are. They are the best of the best and highlight how bright our collective future is with these fine leaders leading the way.” 

The champion team will be awarded the Reginald E. Johnson memorial plaque, and a mounted cadet saber, named for Thomas Surdyke, a West Point Sandhurst competitor who perished during the land navigation phase in 1980. There will also be awards presented to the top International and ROTC teams and squad leader. 

International Teams: Albania, Brazil, Canada (2), Chile, Denmark, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Republic of Korea, Sweden, and United Kingdom (2). 

ROTC Teams: University of Arkansas, Austin Peay State University, University of Central Florida, Riddle Aeronautical University, Furnam University, University of Hawaii, Lehigh University, Liberty University, Marquette University, University of Minnesota, University of Notre Dame, Oregon State University, Texas A&M University, University of Texas – Austin, University of Vermont, and Virginia Military Institute. 

U.S. Military Academy Company Teams: A1, A2, E2, F2, A3, B3, G3, D4, F4, and H4. 

Service Academies: U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and U.S. Military Academy: Black and Gold Teams (2).
