CHESTER, Pa. – Beat Navy. Sing Second. Claim the Star.
Army West Point Men's Soccer did just that Friday night at Subaru Park. In the waning minutes of Army-Navy Cup XIII, Gage Lyons collected a loose ball in the middle of the 18-yard box and put the ball in the back of the net in the 84-minute to give the Black Knights a 2-1 lead that stood through the final whistle.
The goal sealed the result in a lively match that featured 40 total shots between the sides.
Army wasted little time drawing initial blood. Ronald Zhai finished an Owen Ennis corner kick in the 7-minute unmarked, making it 1-0 for the remainder of the first half. The Black Knights and Midshipmen each finished the opening 45 minutes with eight shots apiece.
Navy would find an equalizer in the 55-minute, when Midshipman Jalen Grant put home a corner kick from Victor Saade.
Both sides created chances across the remainder of the second half, but Army outshot the Midshipmen 19-11 in total and 11-3 in the second half. Army also won the shots on goal battle, 10-6, with Ronald Zhai's three shots on target leading the match.
Blair Camargo returned to the starting XI after a two-match absence and made five saves. Lyons’ six total shots meanwhile led both teams.
