After three years of renovation, the Thaddeus Kosciuszko statue has returned, once again perched on a newly refined pedestal overlooking the Hudson Valley. John Latrobe's sculpture of the Polish general is the second-largest Kosciuszko statue in the world, with the largest statue located in Krakow, Poland. The Directorate of Public Works was gifted 1.5 million dollars to preserve the monument’s structural integrity and historical significance for many years to come. The marble used for the renovation came from Tate, Georgia, and was transferred to the Rock of Ages Granite Quarry Company in Barre, Vermont for refinement. The Quarry Company stated that this was the largest marble monument project they have worked on in 80 years. Currently, the statue faces the Hudson River to commemorate Kosciuszko's significant two-year contribution to fortifying West Point's defenses against the British during the American Revolutionary War. An official commemoration is anticipated to be held in the spring.
