The U.S. Military Academy Mission
The mission of the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) is to build, educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets to be commissioned leaders of character committed to the Army Values and ready for a lifetime of service to the Army and Nation.
West Point develops leaders of character through a 47-month process through its academic, military, and physical programs. This West Point Leader Development System (WPLDS) synchronizes the different programs and ensures an emphasis on character development is integrated into each element.
Academy Leadership

Lieutenant General Steven W. Gilland
61st Superintendent
The U.S. Military Academy at West Point
Welcome to the United States Military Academy at West Point!
Our mission is to “build, educate, train, and inspire” leaders of character. Through this mission, we are charged with forging and developing the next generation of officers to lead the United States Army’s greatest strength and most important weapon system — its Soldiers — to fight and win on the 21st-century battlefield.
We are not a college, a university, or a campus…we’re so much more than that. We are THE United States Military Academy - a living, breathing leadership laboratory that prepares young men and women to become leaders of character for the Army and our Nation.

"West Point is the preeminent leader development institution in the world."

Sustaining Global Preeminence
Unlike the Mission Statement, which contains USMA's mission essential task with four subtasks, USMA’s Vision statement is what we strive to continue to be. To sustain global preeminence, USMA must continuously transform, adapt, and improve to stay ahead of the rapidly changing demands placed upon future commissioned leaders of character.
The USMA Strategy identifies the areas in which we seek to improve to continue to be the preeminent leader development institution in the world.

Building for the Future
USMA is building for the future in many ways, including transforming infrastructure; building a talented team of faculty, staff, and coaches; and developing and maintaining external relationships that enable USMA to provide its wealth of intellectual capital in service to the Army and Nation.

A Top-Tier Education
USMA educates cadets with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for a global, multi-domain environment by providing a fully-funded, world-class education grounded in character development.
Our modernized infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, collaboration with external partners and constituents, and opportunities for in-depth study in a variety of academic majors and institutional and program accreditations enhance USMA’s preeminent leadership development and top-tier programs.
We provide cadets and faculty with the relevant and innovative skills and abilities that make our educational experience nationally recognized.

Training Tomorrow's Leaders
USMA trains Cadets to develop the military and physical skills needed for future warfighting.
The dynamic environment in which graduates lead Soldiers will be different on graduation from what it was when they joined the Army on Reception Day. This environment challenges us to provide the right developmental experiences and opportunities that develop the Corps of Cadets into values-based leaders of character who have a desire to serve, want to make a difference, and can face adversity and overcome challenges.
The Army Profession requires this, the Nation expects it.

Inspiring Excellence
USMA’s mission essential task is to develop commissioned leaders of character. The purpose of USMA’s mission-essential task is that the commissioned leaders of character are ready for a lifetime of service to the Army and Nation.
The unique history, traditions, and values of the Army and West Point imbues in cadets the passion and ability to steward the Army Profession.
Through the professional excellence of its supportive staff, faculty, coaches, fellow cadets, and alumni, cadets are immersed in a demanding, values- and standards-based system that challenges them and their leadership abilities and inspired to be the very best they can be, to live honorably, lead honorably, and demonstrate excellence.
