About the Department

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) focuses on equipping cadets with the technical and leadership skills needed to tackle the complex engineering challenges of the modern world. It offers an integrated curriculum that blends structural design, transportation, and construction management principles with critical topics in environmental sustainability, water resource management, and pollution mitigation.

Its mission is to educate and inspire Army Leaders of Character prepared to engineer resilient and sustainable solutions to the Nation’s toughest challenges.

Cadets engage in hands-on learning through research, laboratory experimentation, and real-world engineering projects, all designed to develop their innovative thinking. Drawing on the strengths of both civil and environmental engineering, CEE prepares graduates to address diverse challenges - from building resilient infrastructure and sustainable systems to ensuring environmental security - in support of military and civilian missions worldwide.

Majors

The department provides courses tailored to cadets majoring in civil and environmental engineering. Majors determine course requirements and academic timelines and often help cadets determine what branches they want to pursue after USMA graduation. Both CEE majors are ABET-accredited.

Research

CEE cadets, faculty, and staff develop inspiration toward pursuing new knowledge through various outstanding research-oriented programs.

Cadets can pursue research and independent study projects overseen by faculty and made possible through partnerships with organizations outside of the academy.

Each cadet in departmental majors takes part in a capstone engineering project. These hands-on experiences are not necessarily research - they often focus on practical application of learned engineering skills rather than investigation of novel concepts - but they provide cadets with valuable design experience as they seek solutions for real-world challenges.

Internships

Cadets can apply for Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD) summer programs. AIADs are academic enrichment experiences either run by USMA or coordinated with external partners as internships. These experiences help cadets build on classroom knowledge in new and often challenging circumstances.

Clubs & Programs

Opportunities for professional and personal growth extend past the classroom. Cadets meeting requirements for international or national honor societies or profession-oriented organizations may choose to join them.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is a proud steward of Golden Key, an international honor society, Phi Kappa Phi, the oldest and largest collegiate honor society, Tau Beta Pi, an honor society for engineers of all disciplines, and the Order of the Engineer, a professional order for engineering which seeks to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession.

Cadets may also choose to participate in many clubs or activities that appeal to their personal interests. CEE sponsors the Civil & Military Engineering (CME) Club, a student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
