About the Department

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering aims to inspire, educate, and develop leaders of character with a solid foundation in the disciplines of mechanical and aerospace engineering who can design and implement solutions in complex environments as trusted Army professionals and stewards of the engineering profession.

Aerospace engineering is crucial for developing and testing prototypes of aircraft and spacecraft. Mechanical engineers can work across a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, robotics, energy, and transportation. They also are involved in many aspects of the aerospace industry, including the design and development of aircraft, spacecraft, and related components.

Majors

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering provides courses tailored to cadets interested in mechanical and aerospace engineering. Majors determine course requirements and academic timelines as well as the type of career or branch that a cadet may choose to pursue after USMA graduation. The MAE majors will prepare cadets for careers shaping technology's future.

Research

MAE cadets, faculty, and staff participate in the pursuit of knowledge through USMA’s variety of outstanding research-oriented centers, institutes, and programs. Cadets may take part in capstone projects, offering hands-on experience in designing solutions for real-world challenges.

Internships

MAE offers international and domestic summer Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD) internships. These academic enrichment experiences led by USMA or coordinated with external partners create excellent opportunities for cadets to practice what they learn in the classroom and use their leadership skills in new and often challenging circumstances.
