Brigade finalist teams and individuals competed in the Spring Brigade Athletics Championships among company athletic teams on May 1 at Daly Field and the Arvin Cadet Physical Development Center.
The finalists competed in five sports to include Flickerball, Ultimate Frisbee, Orienteering, Team Handball and Grappling under the purview of the Department of Physical Education.
After the dust cleared and the competitors gave their best efforts, the champions and runners up were recognized in an awards ceremony on Daly Field.
In Flickerball, Company D-1 defeated Company D-4. In Ultimate Frisbee, Company I-4 took the championship from Company D-2. In Orienteering, each regiment had its fastest two company teams run the lanes as Company E-1 took the overall award while Company G-2, E-3 and E-4 earned the best status in their regiments. Company C-2 beat Company C-4 in Team Handball to take the 2023 spring brigade championship.
In Grappling, nine champions were crowned as Jessica Ho (Co. A-3/women’s 140 pounds), Natane Randall (Co. A-1/women’s 160 pounds), Nicole Wanga (Co. G-1/women’s 160+ pounds) earned the women’s grappling championship while Rafael Munoz (Co. A-4/men’s 140 pounds), Yirdaw Rivera (Co. A-3/men’s 155 pounds), Jordan Frederick (Co. H-2/men’s 170 pounds), Maxwell Felter (Co. A-3/men’s 185 pounds), Dennis Kukharev (Co. A-2/men’s 205 pounds) and Tanner Traugutt (Co. I-1/men’s 205+ pounds) secured the men’s grappling championship.
The was also the Mascot Games as part of the fun and the champion was Company A-1 with Company D-2 as the runner-up and Company B-4 finishing in third place.
The winner of the Banker’s Trophy was Company D-1 followed by Company D-2, I-3 and G-4. Since 1924, the Banker’s Trophy has been awarded to the company from each regiment with the highest Company Athletics Performance across the entire academic year to include the fall and spring semesters. The trophy is displayed on the first floor of Arvin Cadet Physical Development Center and was gifted to the Corps of Cadets from the Banker’s Association of NYC in 1922. It is an 18-pint solid sterling silver trophy made by Tiffany and Company.
