Biology Major - Standard

Biology
Major
The most important “system” in the Army is the human soldier. Because the soldier is a biological system, biology, biotechnology, and medicine offer unique potential for enhancing the performance of this most complex, critical, and costly of the Army’s systems. Biologists study the structure and processes of living organisms using the unifying principles of life: cell theory, evolution, genetics, and homeostasis.
Offered by the Department of Chemical & Biological Science & Engineering.

Biology is the study of life - from molecules and cells to ecosystems and global systems. It explores how living things grow, adapt, and interact, giving cadets a foundation in critical scientific thinking and problem-solving. Are you fascinated by living things - from cells and DNA to animals, ecosystems, and the human body? Do you want to use science to solve real-world problems in health, the environment, or national defense? Then the Biology major at West Point could be the perfect fit for you.
Why Choose Biology at USMA?
At West Point, Biology is more than a classroom subject - it’s an immersive, hands-on experience. State-of-the-art labs and facilities allow cadets to work with cutting-edge technology, from genetics and microbiology to ecology and environmental science. You’ll also complete a capstone research project, where you tackle real-world problems relevant to Army needs.
Faculty mentors, both military officers and civilian scholars, guide cadets through independent and collaborative research, often leading to presentations at national conferences and publications. Biology at USMA also connects directly to graduate school opportunities, including prestigious scholarships and advanced studies at top institutions worldwide. Whether your path leads to medical school, research, or specialized Army branches, this major equips you with the knowledge and leadership to succeed.
Choosing Biology at West Point means preparing to solve some of the Army’s most pressing challenges - improving soldier health, protecting the environment, and advancing scientific innovation - all while developing as a leader of character.
What Can You Do with This Major?
Biology majors develop skills highly valued across the Army. You might lead in medical service fields, support combat units with expertise in environmental and health sciences or contribute to biodefense and infectious disease research. This background also prepares you for graduate education in medicine, veterinary science, public health, and biotechnology- fields vital to military readiness and national security.
Interested Cadets
The Biology major program isn’t just about learning facts - it’s about developing problem-solving skills, conducting research, and applying science to real challenges in Army medicine, environmental operations, or national security. The program is built to give you a strong foundation in core biological principles while also letting you explore specialized areas that connect directly to Army needs.
Here’s what you can expect to study:
Core Foundation:
Introductory biology, chemistry, and physics courses to ground you in the natural sciences.
Genetics, cell biology, and physiology to understand how living systems work from the inside out.
Ecology and evolution to see how organisms interact with each other and their environments.
Advanced and Applied Courses:
Human anatomy and physiology - key for understanding soldier health, injury, and performance.
Microbiology and immunology - vital for addressing infectious diseases, biodefense, and global health threats.
Biochemistry and molecular biology - critical for biotechnology and medical research.
Hands-On Learning:
Extensive lab work in modern facilities.
Fieldwork in ecology, environmental biology, or conservation.
A capstone research project, where you investigate a real-world biological problem, often tied to Army or Department of Defense priorities.
Electives and Specializations:
Depending on your interests, you may explore topics like:
Neurobiology (brain and behavior)
Environmental science and sustainability
Biotechnology and genetic engineering
Toxicology and public health
